This week Singaporean cosplayer viospace, with over 50,000 pageviews on deviantART, is featured cosplay interviewee! We love the variety in her cosplays and how she makes her own costumes and props and manages to pull off cute, sexy, intense, and dramatic looks! See what she has to say about her cosplay life in our interview below:

CS: We always start out with this question, because we love to see the variation in responses: what first got you into anime, manga, and cosplay?
V: I started out being an otaku who loves watching anime and reading manga thanks to local TV channels that show anime every week. I attended my first anime convention in 2006 as an onlooker and got attracted by the cosplayers at the event. Ever since then, I started attending conventions to see and take pictures of cosplayers. But I didn’t have the courage to try until this friend of mine who does cosplay invited me to join him. I decided to go for it and started my first cosplay in 2008. Now I’m totally addicted and in love with it!

CS: Do you make most of your cosplays yourself? Can you tell us a little bit about your cosplay-making process?
V: Yes, I sew most of my costumes myself. I use to have them tailored because I had no idea how to sew. But after I learnt how to use a sewing machine, I started making my own costumes. I go online to source for tutorials and patterns to help me with my costume making.
I make most of my props myself as well, but it takes me a lot more time to make props, so I usually try to finish my props first before I work on my outfits.

CS: Do you prefer sewing or making props, and why?
V: I prefer sewing as it is easier, in my opinion. I can rush out costumes within a day, but I can never do that for props since I’m really bad with art and crafts. I also enjoy sewing more as it never fails to make me happy when I see piles of cloth become costumes.

CS: We noticed that you are also very skilled at doing cosplay and costume makeup! Can you give us some of your favorite makeup tips or pointers that we might not know about?
V: Oh no, I’m still learning actually, so I’m not quite sure as whatever I’m doing now may be wrong. But I think putting your bottom eyelashes first before the top ones makes it a lot easier. I also love to shade my nose because my nose is too flat. I did not buy the shading powder so I used brown and white eye shadow for the shading. The effect is almost the same!

CS: We know that the cosplay scene is pretty big in Singapore. For all of us who live in other countries, though, can you tell us about your cosplay experience living in Singapore?
V: The people here are generally quite friendly, in my opinion. I also love it that when I approach them for pictures and chat, they are really nice and positive. Thanks to that, I managed to make a lot of friends in the circle – and hanging out together was not a problem either!

CS: We always have to ask this question to our cosplayers: which of your cosplays is your personal favorite, and why?
V: I would say it is Gintama. I actually cosplayed quite a few characters from this series simply because I love this series a lot. I feel that being able to bring your favorite characters to life by yourself is one of the best things in cosplay.

CS: Is there a cosplayer who really inspires you?
V: I actually have quite a number of cosplayers who inspire me. The first one will be RainerTachibana aka Shizuka from Singapore. Her cosplays are so amazing, and she is also one of the reasons why I stepped into cosplay. After knowing her, I realized she is a really nice and friendly person. Next will be Behindinfinity aka Jin from Philippines. I was really inspired when I saw her Naruto cosplay as I was a “Narutard” back then. Got the chance to talk to her during AFA 2011, and she is a really friendly and nice person. I also loved Kuryu from Japan. Her Gintoki cosplays are by far the best I have seen, and she is also a fan of Gintama. I would love to be able to meet her in real life someday.

CS: We’ve seen a lot of your cosplay pictures and love your blog updates about your conventions! However, we would also love to know about the Vio outside of cosplay.
V: My personal life is actually quite boring, haha! I like to watch anime or hang out with friends during my free time. I also loved singing and traveling. I have always wanted to travel around the world if I have the chance.

CS: Finally, our trademark ending-theme: please share with us a song that really gets you motivated and inspired!
V: One of my favorites would be Sakuramitsutsuki by Spyair. It is one of the ending themes for Gintama, and I always feel inspired when I hear this song.
Hope all of you will love it too! ☺
